Find relief from oversized breasts in Miami, FL
Only women with large and heavy breasts can understand the burden that comes with them. While full breasts are often deemed beautiful and desirable, women with abnormally large breasts or macromastia (breast hypertrophy) usually see things a little differently.
Breast reduction helps alleviate the strain associated with oversized breasts to create a better-proportioned, more balanced figure that brings both physical and emotional comfort.
At PURE Plastic Surgery, our highly experienced plastic surgeons offer breast reduction surgery to help lighten the weight and improve the shape of your breasts so you can live the full, comfortable life you dream of.
What is
Breast Reduction?
Most body frames are not built to carry the excess weight that comes with overly large breasts. Additionally, it often feels as though people do not truly see you when they look at you; they only see your breasts. Because of this, many women turn to breast reduction surgery to reduce physical pain and enhance their self-confidence in social and intimate situations.
Breast reduction is performed to remove excess skin, fat and glandular tissue from cumbersome breasts. This surgery, also known as reduction mammaplasty, has one of the highest satisfaction rates among all cosmetic procedures, and women who undergo this operation often come out asking themselves one question: why did I wait so long?
Benefits of Breast Reduction Surgery
Few cosmetic procedures offer as many benefits as breast reduction. Some of these perks include:
- Reduction of back, neck, shoulder and chest pain
- Better posture and spine alignment
- Increased comfort when exercising — and more energy to exercise
- Increased confidence
- Reduction in shoulder divots from bra straps
- Alleviation of chronic rashes in between and beneath breasts
- Reduction in breast sagging and drooping
- Better symmetry
- Increased mobility
- Clothing that fits better
- Better ability to find bras that actually give you the support you need
- A proportionate body frame
- Long-lasting results
Many women find that they have trouble fully participating in their favorite activities due to the discomfort caused by their chest. This surgery allows you to take back control of your life.
Am I a good candidate for Breast Reduction?
Breast reduction is ideal for anyone looking to achieve any of the above benefits. If you have overly large breasts and are looking to enhance your proportions and comfort, this procedure might be right for you. Ideal candidates for breast reduction surgery include those who:
- Are in good overall health and do not have any health conditions that impair healing
- Are at a stable weight
- Have fully developed breasts
- Are not currently pregnant or breastfeeding
- Are realistic in their expectations
- Desire this surgery for themselves
While it is possible to undergo this procedure at a younger age, it is important to wait until your breasts have stopped growing to ensure that you will enjoy your results for years to come. Many patients seek breast reduction surgery to alleviate the symptoms associated with macromastia, a condition that causes abnormal enlargement of the breast tissue, but it can also be performed for cosmetic reasons if you’re unhappy with the appearance of a larger chest.
How is Breast Reduction performed?
Breast reduction is a fully customizable procedure, and with the guidance of our experienced plastic surgeons, you will have the final say on what you want for your results.
Breast reduction is performed under general anesthesia for your safety and comfort. This operation will be performed at our certified and fully equipped outpatient surgical center in Miami, Florida. At PURE, our team prioritizes your safety and wants you to feel as comfortable with the process as much as you love your results.
To begin, an incision is made in the breasts to allow your surgeon to access the underlying tissues. Depending on the extent of reduction needed, incisions will follow one of two patterns:
- A keyhole incision runs around the areola and vertically down the lower pole of the breasts.
- An anchor incision mimics the keyhole incision but includes a secondary incision across the inframammary fold.
Through these incisions, your surgeon will remove excess tissue and fat, usually via liposuction. They will then sculpt and reposition the breasts by tightening the remaining tissues and trimming loose skin. These final steps give you some of the benefits of a breast lift in addition to a reduction in size. Your incisions will be closed with removable or absorbable sutures, and you will be taken to a recovery room, where you will be monitored until you are discharged.
If necessary, your areolas and nipples can be resized during your surgery to help you achieve more comprehensive results. Nipple and areola reduction are popular add-on procedures to ensure that your newly resized breasts remain proportionate and aesthetically pleasing.
Breast reduction with a lift takes between one and three hours to perform, depending on the amount of tissue and fat that needs to be removed.
Breast Reduction recovery
Once you have awakened, you will return home to begin your recovery. As this procedure is performed under general anesthesia, you will need a friend to drive you to and from surgery and stay with you for the first 24 to 48 hours.
You can expect to experience side effects like swelling, bruising and general discomfort for a few weeks after your breast reduction. These symptoms are very normal, and prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication can be taken to enhance comfort.
It is important to not strain your body or push yourself too soon following breast reduction. This will include exercising, heavy lifting and even some day-to-day chores. Most patients reincorporate these activities within two to four weeks, but strenuous exercise may need to be avoided for up to six weeks. If you have children, be sure to arrange for caretakers during this time.
Your breasts will be wrapped in bandages or gauze and covered with a compression bra. Our team will provide you with instructions on caring for your incisions and advise you how long you should wear your compression bra to support your new breast contours.
While you will need to attend all follow-up appointments, breast reduction is considered to be a one-and-done procedure, and you will not need any maintenance treatments.
Breast Reduction results
Breast reduction will help achieve the look you’ve always wanted, and most women are thrilled with their aesthetic results as well as the physical and emotional improvements in their bodies. Following breast reduction, you will notice smaller, tighter, lifted and more balanced breasts.
Results will be visible immediately after your surgery; however, they will continue to improve over the following weeks and months. Most swelling should resolve itself around the three-month mark, and your scars will continue to fade throughout the first year of recovery.
