What to expect during
Eyelid Surgery
Blepharoplasty may focus on the lower eyelids, upper eyelids, or both, depending on your concerns and anatomy. During your consultation, our team will examine your eyes and recommend the best approach for creating a natural look that rejuvenates your appearance. Eyelid surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure at our state-of-the-art surgical facility in Miami and takes about an hour to complete. If all four eyelids are being targeted, it may take longer. We use general anesthesia to keep you comfortable, although local anesthesia may be used for upper blepharoplasty, depending on your needs and preferences. You’ll be able to return home shortly after your procedure to begin the recovery process.
Upper Eyelid Surgery
Upper eyelid surgery removes sagging skin in the upper eyelid area to make the eyes look more open, refreshed and alert. To address these concerns, your surgeon will take precise measurements and make a small incision in the crease of the upper eyelid, following your natural contours for minimal scarring. Excess skin and tissue will then be trimmed. Once a more youthful look has been achieved, the incisions are closed with dissolvable sutures.
Lower Eyelid Surgery
Lower eyelid surgery targets excess fat and tissue beneath the eyes that can lead to puffiness. For bottom lid corrections, a small incision may be placed on the inner eyelid or hidden below your eyelashes. Excess skin and fat are then removed to refresh your appearance. Incisions are closed with dissolvable sutures, and you’ll be able to go home shortly after your procedure.
Quadruple Blepharoplasty
Quadruple blepharoplasty, also known as combined upper and lower eyelid surgery, addresses concerns in the upper and lower eyelids for more comprehensive results. It’s common for patients who have undergone either an upper or lower eye lift often come back and regret not having both procedures performed simultaneously, so our team may recommend this approach to provide full rejuvenation of the eyes with a single recovery period. The surgery itself may take longer to complete, but the expected downtime is about the same (one to two weeks).
Eyelid Surgery results
Your eye lift results will depend on your specific concerns and the techniques used, but overall, you can expect a brighter, refreshed and more youthful appearance. If sagging tissues obstructed your line of sight, you can also expect improved vision after surgery. Scarring is minimal following blepharoplasty, as incisions are hidden inside or along the natural crease of the eyelids. Once they’ve healed, they will blend in well with the surrounding skin.
For most patients, the results of eyelid surgery are permanent, as removed skin and tissue won’t come back. However, your eyes will not be immune to the effects of aging. Adopting a good skin care routine and protecting your eyes from sun damage can help prolong your results. Nonsurgical treatments like Botox or dermal fillers can also be used to address other concerns you may experience, such as fine lines, wrinkles or dark circles beneath the eyes.
