Gaining Weight After Liposuction
Can you gain weight after liposuction?
In 2020, nearly 300,000 people had liposuction. At PURE we see first-hand the positive results from liposuction to all areas, including face, abdomen, back and thighs. One question we always get asked is, “if I gain weight, will the fat return to the areas that received liposuction?”
The short answer is, yes.
Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty or body contouring is a surgical procedure that permanently removes fat cells from the body. During the surgery, unwanted fat is removed from specific areas of the body to help re-shape and create a more contoured silhouette. Areas commonly contoured with liposuction include, hips, thighs, knees, buttocks, abdomen, under the chin, neck, and upper arms.
What are the types of liposuction procedures?
There are four types of liposuction procedures:
An Ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL) surgery turns fat cells into liquid using ultrasonic vibrations. Once the cells are liquified they are vacuumed out of the body with the liposuction cannula.
Tumescent liposuction (fluid injection) requires the surgeon to inject a medicated solution of anesthetic and a salt solution to the areas in need of fat removal. It is the most common type of liposuction.
During Laser-assisted liposuction (LAL) a laser is used to liquify the fat cells, which are then vacuumed out or drained through small tubes. This procedure uses a small cannula and if often performed on smaller areas on the face, such as the chin and cheek areas.
Who is a good candidate for liposuction?
The best candidates for liposuction are patients already at or near their ideal weight who do not have plans for pregnancy in the future. Patients with positive eating habits and exercise routines typically have better long-term results for the procedure. During consultations, we ask patients to avoid significant weight gain post-surgery, however, there is a misconception that once fat is removed through liposuction that the area will always remain slim and contoured. It is true that the fat cells removed during liposuction will never return, but with weight gain the remaining fat cells can swell. This swelling can impact the results of the surgery.
What can you do if you gain weight after liposuction?
Life happens and weight gain can occur after liposuction. If the results of the procedure are compromised by significant weight gain or pregnancy, the patient may want to consult with their primary doctor for solutions. In some cases, the surgeon may suggest another round of liposuction or other body contouring procedures.
