Plastic Surgery’s Positive Impact on Mental Health
There are several published studies that discuss the positive psychological effects plastic and cosmetic surgery can have on patients, specifically the increase in positive body image and self-esteem and a decrease in symptoms of anxiety and depression. It’s true that not every participant felt the positive effects of plastic surgery, disappointment was mostly attributed to unrealistic expectations and body dysmorphia. The consensus is there is a strong correlation to improved mental health, well- being and self-image for most who have undergone plastic surgery procedures.
At PURE we agree with the studies, which correlate to what we experience with our patients – that plastic surgery can improve a patient’s personal outlook and in turn, their lives. Many of our patients arrive at their first consultation anxious and excited to discuss goals and desires for their physical appearance. Some share that they are self-conscious about various aspects of their body from facial features to private areas. Many have suffered for years. We understand the importance of positive body image as it relates to self-esteem and depression, and our goal is to help restore and rejuvenate areas of the body that may cause patients angst and affect their mental health. In one study over 30% of patients who were on anti-depression medication prior to surgery, were able to stop them completely after their elected procedures.
Plastic surgery is not a cure-all from all of life’s problems, and mental health improvement should not be expected over night. It is definitely a unique journey that differs vastly from person to person. We encourage our patients to view plastic surgery as a tool to improve their natural body, and not as a vehicle used to morph into someone else – whether it’s a celebrity, influencer, family member or friend. We also highlight that surgery can’t be expected to repair relationships or social influence, but it may give you the confidence to approach these areas of your life with an improved sensibility.
Having a strong support system in place prior to surgery and throughout the experience can be instrumental in how it impacts mental health. PURE patients surrounded by loving, supportive and trusting family and friends fair better mentally in their recovery than those in negative environments. Patients who are able to rest both physically and mentally for the recommended amount of time typically have better mental health results.
