The advice I would give someone who wants to be a plastic surgeon is that they have to love it. It is a long and challenging road, so in order to be happy, you have to truly enjoy what you are doing. I would also add that one should embrace technology that improves the experience and safety of patients. And while surgery can be technical, it’s important to view yourself not only as a doctor but as an artist who shapes, sculpts, and creates using the body as a canvas.

As Dr. Alex Earle, a renowned Miami-based plastic surgeon, explains, many factors go into shaping an hourglass figure. Genetics, bone structure and shape, body type, and lifestyle all play a role. In fact, most people can’t attain this look with exercise alone. “If someone is straight up and down, no exercise or diet can change that into a more curvaceous shape,” says Dr. Alex Earle. “In that case, the best way to create an hourglass figure is to surgically add fat to the hips and butt with the help of a board-certified plastic surgeon.

Initially, butt lift surgeries removed excess skin and tissue to reduce sagging. According to Dr. Alex Earle, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Miami who has performed more than 2,000 ultrasound-guided BBLs, Dr. Pitanguy advocated for only a modest amount of fat transfer. Yet, surgeons became more aggressive over the years, reallocating much more significant amounts of fat into various planes of the buttocks, which led to the labeling of the surgery as dangerous and even lethal.
