How many plastic surgery procedures can be performed simultaneously?

Many patients ask if they can have more than one procedure done at once. The best answer is that I do what is safest for the patient and I follow the Florida State laws. There are many factors to consider, such as the patient’s health profile, number of hours necessary to perform procedures and the amount of fat extracted.

Patient health profile

Every patient is assessed on an individual basis on whether they are a candidate for multiple plastic surgical procedures during one surgery. A thorough health profile from a primary care physician is required during the assessment process that may include BMI, lab work and other examinations.

Number of hours for surgical procedures

Patients under anesthesia for more than six (6) hours for elective plastic surgery can be at greater risk for complications. Therefore, if having multiple procedures will require more hours than deemed safe, then the patient will have to consider having more than one surgery to meet their goals.

Plastic surgery procedures with fat extraction

The State of Florida allows surgeons to extract 4000cc (roughly 7-8 pounds of fat) during surgery. This is applicable for a BBL or liposuction. If there is an additional procedure, such as the addition of breast augmentation, then only one (1) liter of fat can be removed during surgery. These laws are in place for patient safety and to ease healing – mentally and physically during recovery.

Technological advances

As surgeons we are required to adhere to the laws and put patient safety first. However, we also want to exceed patient goals and create beautiful results.
