How to Choose Your Breast Implants
Four factors to consider: type, size, profile and shape.
No two breasts are the same and when researching breast augmentation, it is important to consider your current breast size, profile and shape against your goals. Looking at photos of other breasts is very helpful in determining what best suits your body structure and will garner the desired results after the procedure. When making the final decisions, there are four elements to consider when choosing your breast implant: type of implant, optimal breast size, desired breast profile and shape.
Types of breast implants to consider – saline and silicone
There are two options for breast implants if you are 22 years of age or older: saline and silicone. Legally, 18–21-year-olds are not able to choose silicone implants, and this should be considered when you are deciding when to have the procedure. There are pros and cons to both types of implants.
The difference between saline and silicone breast implants
For many, saline implants may have a firmer feel and are better able to contour and fit to the natural breast structure. Silicone implants are now made with a gel similar to soft gummy bears and may appear more natural looking while offering a more natural feel. When you visit your surgeon for a consultation, make sure to hold a saline and silicone implant to feel the difference between their texture and weight.
How to choose the right breast implant size
Size is a very important factor in choosing the right implants for your breast augmentation surgery. When choosing the right breast implant size patients must consider their current cup size, frame and skin elasticity. All breast implants, whether saline or silicone are measured in cubic centimeters (cc) and the sizes range from 125 cc up to 1200 cc. For every increase in cup size, add 250 cc. It can be difficult to imagine what volume is required to achieve the size, and your surgeon can help you make the best decision.
How to choose the right profile for breast implant
The breast profile is measured by the projection from the chest and will need to be considered when choosing a breast implant. A low-profile breast implant can create a more natural look whereas a higher profile implant will provide more projection and will be more noticeable.
How to choose the best implant shape
There are two breast shapes to consider for breast augmentation surgery: teardrop or round. Teardrop-shaped implants create more natural volume on the lower portion of the breast and definition in the area under the nipple. Round implants are more symmetrical in shape. They give more projection and fullness to the breast and nipple.
